Ray Travis AN Orvis consultant and fly pattern
innovator. He originally hails from Ohio, but we were
fortunate enough to steal him for ourselves. He leads most of
our fly tying classes. Recently I (Steve) was on a trip with Ray and he started
throwing the largest, ugliest damn fly in the world. It was a
big old red cross cut leech pattern on a size two hook with lead
eyes. When I asked him what the hell he was thinking (the
creek was only about 20 feet wide, a pretty little spring creek),
he just smiled, as if to say "wait".....I was currently fishing a
pretty little size 16 sparkle sulpher to put things in
perspective...That very drift hooked into and landed a fish that
easily went 26 inches....I am now a believer...I ran back to the
cabin, raided Ray's tying stash and started making lead eye leeches
as fast as I could tie.... |

Don Tammaro is a long time Trout Unlimited member and has fishing longer than most of us even knew what a fly rod was. He has fished extensively in Colorado and Pennsylvania. Every time I look at the size of this striper I get envious..... |

of 2003 to take advantage of the year round fishing
opportunities. The past year and a half he has spent
countless days on the Erie tribs and the cold water
streams of western and central PA. He's an active member of
Trout Unlimited, Gem City Fly Tiers, the Erie Casting Club and the
Northwest PA Sportsmen's Coalition. In the mid-1970's he cut
